Environmental Assessment and Demolition

Berth 4 Grain Elevator/Silo Complex – Longview, WA

CRETE performed an environmental site assessment, prepared design and construction documents, and provided bid support and construction oversight for demolition of the Berth 4 Grain Elevator/Silo Complex project on the Columbia River for the Port of Longview.

The original complex was built in 1927 and was operated by Longview Elevator Company until it was leased to Continental Grain in 1936. Additional silos were built in 1945 and 1951, and a storage shed (Bin X) was constructed off the 1951 silos in 1954. The Berth 4 Grain Elevator/Silo Complex had been shuttered since 1989 with the majority of the original infrastructure remaining.

The demolition included the removal of numerous structures including:

  • BinX Bulk Storage
  • 1927 Elevator Complex with includes: 1927 Elevator, 10 Silos, Work House and Track Shed
  • 1945 Elevator Complex with includes: 1945 Elevator, 12 Silos, Conveyor, and Office
  • 1951 Elevator Complex with includes: 1951 Elevator, 18 Silos, Work House, and Conveyor
  • Supporting structures including: car dump complexes, bulk storage building, offices/lab buildings

Work was complicated by the presence of a flood control levee managed by the USACE and the Cowlitz County Diking Improvement District #1. The presence of the levee restricted the amount of subsurface disturbance permitted. Because of the location of this project, the close proximity of adjacent operations, active rail lines and safety considerations, the use of explosives for any element of demolition was prohibited.

Work was completed in 2023 and 2024.
